AI and Employment
Many writers have opined on the potential for AI to cause a massive increase in unemployment, but few have analyzed how AI can actually create jobs. Clearly there are solid arguments for both scenarios. On the one hand, AI could displace many entry level software engineering jobs, and on the other hand, AI could increase the number of Software Engineering Manager positions that require real people to oversee the use of AI and instead utilize AI as a tool.
As Robert Armstrong and Ethan Wu write in the Financial Times newsletter Unhedged:
"Nvidia stock closed 10 per cent off its recent peak yesterday, despite a steady flow of news about all the life-changing AI models just around the bend. Unhedged has two very simple tests for assessing AI efficacy. First, can it file our expenses? At that threshold, it is productivity-enhancing and good. Second, can it replace us? Then, it is productivity-destroying and must be stopped at all costs."
Does AI communicate effectively? Is it creative? Does it ask the correct questions when attempting to accomplish a task? Does it come at each project from multiple angles?
I know I can do all of these things which is why I'm not too worried. Are you? Please share in the comments section.
